Similar to the old seasons, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is a point and click adventure game. In contrast to past seasons, there will be two playable characters: Clementine, the heroine from the last games; and Javier, a new character. The current character can be directed by players under their control round the surroundings, analyze and interact with various scenery components and amass and use items to improve the story.
The player may be offered multiple choices from which to choose by certain responses from other characters, with a restricted quantity of time to make the choice, including the choice to stay silent; the dialog will continue as though they had remained quiet, when the player doesn't select an alternative. Such choices can change how the other characters will later respond to the player character which could influence later events in the story. Other scenes are more activity-oriented, requiring the player to complete quick time events to prevent the player-character or her allies from getting killed. The game will restart at the start of such scenes, if the player neglects these events. Such action scenes may also require the player to produce a key decision within a small time frame, such as which of two characters to save from attacking walkers.
Actions and the player's options will affect story components in later episodes; for instance, a character the player will not choose to be saved WOn't appear in later scenes. A New Frontier will incorporate player choices produced in previous games in the series through existing save files; Telltale states they will offer multiple alternatives for how players can bring in previous saves into the sport, including for players which have changed their choice of platform prior To Some New Frontier.
A New Frontier will never be released on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, but players that have saves from Season Two on these platforms will have the ability to download a patch on those games consoles as to upload their saved game to Telltale's servers, and then access that from their new option of platform. Telltale will also give a different tool for players to "swift-create a tailored backstory" for Clementine to this point, using a possible 42 distinct variants, and make a save file from which to start the new season with. Players might also elect to use the default backstory that Telltale has created as the cornerstone for the game.
